FCA “Celebration of Champions” Volleyball/Girls CC Banquet
Panhandle FCA is proud to announce that it will host its 3rd annual “Celebration of Champions” Volleyball & Girls Cross Country banquet. This event will be a celebration of the character and integrity of those who play and coach volleyball and girls cross country in the Texas Panhandle! Varsity volleyball players and runners (those players who played/ran at least 75% of the season on the varsity roster), varsity coaches, and executive school administration are invited to this event. No split varsity, sub-varsity or junior high players/runners, parents (with one exception - see below), or general public are invited to attend this event. Because we are honoring the players/runners and coaches of all varsity volleyball and girls cross country teams in the Panhandle, there will be NO COST to any attendees for this event! FCA will completely underwrite the cost of this event. Each year we will bring in a high profile speaker of excellence to encourage and motivate all who hear their uplifting and life-giving words.
We are honored that our speaker, this year, will be KIM HUDSON WILLIAMS. Kim Hudson Williams has spent most of her life as either an athlete or a coach. Growing up in Amarillo, Texas, Kim played volleyball for both her middle school and high school, and then for the University of Texas at Arlington where she became team captain and was named most valuable player her senior season.
Following her graduation, Kim returned to her hometown and began her volleyball coaching career at the middle and high school levels, then quickly moved on to college as head coach at West Texas A&M, winning a National Championship there in 1990. Kim accepted the head coaching position at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, but after only 2 years, Kim left the west and took over the volleyball program at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC in 1993. In 2005 after 13 seasons, Kim resigned from coaching as the winningest volleyball coach in the school’s history. “While I loved coaching, I was conflicted with where sports were going in the area of recruiting and the pressure put on very young athletes and families to commit to one sport.”
After coaching, Kim pursued a successful career in marketing, first with a regional real estate firm and then in the healthcare industry. In 2013, while serving on the Midlands (Columbia area), SC Board for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, she heard Shane Williamson, the current National President of FCA, give his vision of FCA’s future in the Carolinas. “I wasn’t truly saved until 2008, after I had left coaching, so when Shane spoke about how God was using FCA in the lives of coaches and athletes, the Lord inspired me to go back into athletics, but this time with a different mission in mind.”
Additionally, for each team that attends, we will ask all the players/runners to elect one player as their FCA “MVP.” We will send each Head Coach the criteria for this election and the winning player will be selected by the popular vote of their teammates. The criteria will center around the Four (4) Core Values of FCA which are: Integrity; Teamwork; Service; and Excellence. All the selected FCA MVP’s will be highly honored during this event, and each will walk away with an FCA Volleyball or Cross Country MVP award. At some point during the evening, a picture will be taken with each team’s MVP, their Head Coach, and our speaker. We anticipate that all MVP winners will be featured in our local newspaper. Each MVP’s parents will also be invited to this event. Each team needs to have a “designated” banquet coach contact who will be responsible for keeping up with attendance commitments of players/runners, coaches, administrators, and the MVP’s parent, and who will submit these numbers to FCA at the appropriate deadline dates.
